Vinyl Boat Lettering, Boat Graphics & Boat Registration Numbers:
The vinyl we use is the highest quality in the industry. It is a cast, high performance vinyl which is warrantied from the manufacturer for 8 years against cracking, fading or shrinking. All premium colors are warrantied for 8 years, metallics for 7 years, ultra-metallics for 5 years and 22 K sign gold for 10-14 years.
There are two general types of vinyl in the industry. Cast vinyl is used on boats, cars and trucks for long term exterior applications and calendared vinyl is used for short term interior and exterior signage. Yachtsee.com uses only CAST vinyl from two of the top manufacturers, Avery and Oracal.
Calendared vinyl (NOT used by Yachtseee.com) looks exactly like cast vinyl but will not perform to the specs of cast vinyl. It is significantly cheaper. It has an outdoor life span of 3-5 years depending upon the manufacturer. It is not UV protected which will result in red lettering turning to a shade of pink in 3-5 years. It will crack and shrink. The customer purchasing the product will have no way of telling if he is receiving cast or calendared. Competitive companies selling their products for significantly less are using calandared vinyl. Always ask which type of vinyl is used.
Another misconception consumers have is that thicker vinyl is better than thin vinyl. This is totally false. Cast vinyl is generally 2 mm and very thin. When it is manufactured the color is imbedded throughout the material. Calandared vinyl is typically 5+ mm and feel thicker and the color is a layer on the top which is why this is why it fades with time. Some metallics are thicker by nature like ultrametallics.
Peeling and chipping is not a manufactures defect, it is a result of poor installation. If a good adhesion is not made between the surface and the adhesive coating on the back of the vinyl, peeling and chipping may occur. This is why we stress proper surface preparation before installation. Wax and dirt are problems and if not removed properly will result in lettering which could peel in the future.
We recommend using a good wax removal product for preparing the area properly. Glass window cleaner is not a wax removal product.
