The marine industry is very technology driven and
the Y2K problem could cause maritime information and control systems to malfunction. The
Y2K problem will affect navigation, communication, alarms, control, ballasting, and
electrical systems. Any system with embedded microchips could produce erroneous
data. This could lead to marine casualties, traffic control problems and loading and
unloading problems. Failure to identify and correct Y2K problems before 2000 could result
in serious safety problems such as unexpected shutdown of the main engines and ship
navigation systems, resulting in a collision or grounding. Failure of any onboard computer
system could result in a marine accident, injury to marine personnel or damage to the
marine environment.
