Sailor Bags Made of Sail Cloth

SailorBags are made from the same polyester that Dacron® sails are made from. However, we do not add the resins that are used in making sails, as these make the fabric stiff and far less pleasant to handle. The resulting cloth is very tightly-woven, water and stain-resistant, and has a great “hand-feel.” It’s also very hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant.

How waterproof are SailorBags?

SailorBags will give their contents plenty of protection from rain and spray or a damp dock. Not only is the fabric very water-resistant, but the lining has a waterproof coating on the inside of the bag. No bag that has sewn seams is completely waterproof, however, as water can and will seep in through the seams. So avoid setting your SailorBag in a pool of water.

Doesn’t the white fabric get very dirty?

Just like a sail or favorite pair of jeans, your SailorBags will develop its own patina over time. We have bags that we’ve used for years without washing. To us, they just look well-loved. But if needed, SailorBags are very washable.

Can I wash my SailorBag?

Absolutely. All styles except CoolerBags can be washed in a washer on gentle cycle. Use any laundry detergent, but do not use chlorine bleach, as it will turn the fabric yellow. Dry on low heat or, preferably, hang upside down to dry. If your bag is very dirty, you can pre-soak it in 1/2 cup of automatic dishwasher detergent mixed with about a gallon of water, and add a little vinegar to the final rinse. For washing CoolerBags, see below.

How do I clean my CoolerBag?

The lining of a CoolerBag pulls away from the bag, so that you can really wash the liner, if needed, without soaking the rest of the bag. Under normal circumstances, just wipe the outside or liner with a damp cloth or sponge. Do not immerse your CoolerBag in water, and do not use chlorine bleach on the outside of the bag. Under no circumstances should you put your CoolerBag in a washing machine.

Testimonials

“The soft CoolerBag is as advertised: strong, simple, and beautiful. I would certainly add ‘effective’ to that statement.”

—Soundings Magazine

If you’re in the market for a carry-all or soft-sided cooler, check out the classic-looking SailorBags line… The tightly woven material is rain- and spray-resistant. We tested this in an afternoon squall and in a wet, bumpy dinghy ride. Despite a solid soaking, the bag’s contents stayed dry. The sail cloth lacks the resins typically found in sails, so SailorBags are softer and more flexible than new sails. To ensure water resistance in the foulest of weather, the tough blue lining is coated and the bags’ bottoms are double layered. This also aids abrasion resistance. The Practical Sailor tote bag has seen some rough handling and has yet to show any signs of weathering, or even dirt, in the few months it has been used on a daily basis.

Practical Sailor, November 2007

The new series of soft CoolerBags from SailorBags will make a great addition to any cooler collection. Made from soft, yet heavy sailcloth, these coolers compress for compact storage and are gentle on boat finishes. CoolerBags keep items cold all day long…

My son gave me some of your bags as a gift for being his best man. I was thrilled, as the bags are gorgeous.

“I’ve been boating for 30 plus years. GREAT PRODUCTS AND SERVICE! We boat in Miami and the bags keep ice for over 24 hrs in 90 plus temps. (I’m a) Miami sailor and power boater.”

—R.S., Miami Beach FL

“I saw a SailorBag while on vacation earlier this year, and knew I had to have one. The person who had it said he loved it. I bought two and had them sent 2nd Day Air, because I didn’t want to wait. They arrived in time for my vacation and I am very happy with them. They’re lightweight, easy to recognize at the airport, and actually hold a lot of stuff for medium-sized bags. My SailorBags ROCK!”
