USING THE Puppyjohn

The Puppyjohn was designed to make paper training a more sanitary experience. It's simple. Just lay an open newspaper in it. When it's soiled- roll it up and discard it. Then wipe out the Puppy John with disinfectant and replace the paper.

The Puppyjohn is an effective tool for paper training, that also works great with already trained dogs.

Instructions for Paper Training Puppies

  1. Place the Puppyjohn away from the puppy's bed and eating area.

  2. Place a previously urine-soiled paper under fresh papers in the Puppyjohn to entice the puppy to that area.

  3. Play with your puppy often, returning him to the papers at least every two hours--before and after eating, drinking, playing, and napping.

  4. Use your key word for eliminating each time you return him to the Puppyjohn area.

  5. Praise him when he uses this area.

Helpful tips

  • Remember: a puppy generally eats three to four times a day, takes several naps, and needs to be engaged in playful activity.

  • Most puppies do not have complete bowel and bladder control until four months of age.

  • NEVER rub your puppy's nose in her excrement.

  • Teach your puppy with gentleness.

Paper Training an Older Dog

It’s not impossible to paper train an older dog but you’ve certainly got your work cut out for you. There’s going to be a certain amount of stress involved for you and your dog. Up till now, he’s been encouraged to "go potty" outside, probably even chastised for making mistakes in the house.

Below are several suggestions to help you with the transition. You may use some of them or all of them.

  • Begin taking your dog  to the deck area you want him to use. Instruct him to "go potty" or use whatever key words you use.

  • Praise him/her when they comply.
  • Catch some of his urine and sprinkle some on a newspaper. Place the treated paper under some clean paper     IN THE SPOT YOU WANT HIM TO GO.
  • When you have succeeded in getting him to go in one spot on the deck, take the Puppyjohn out to that spot, put newspaper on it  with his odor, and try to get him to go there.
  • When you notice him pacing or looking for a place, take him to this area and leave him while you go about your business.
  • And remember to Praise, Praise, Praise when he complies!
