Getting There

Listen to Getting There - MP3 file

The sails are up
The sheets are tied
Hold on and enjoy the ride
We're steady getting there

The rigging's tight
The mast is strong
Heeled and sailing along
We're steady getting there

We're getting there
We might not be doing it just like you
We're getting there
Making headway in a wind that's true
We're getting there
Never early never overdue
We're steady getting there

Sun and wind and salt and spray
Couldn't be a better day
We're steady getting there

Kicking back and slicing through
You got me and I got you
We're steady getting there

And we're getting there
We might not be doing it just like you
We're getting there
Making headway in a wind that's true
We're getting there
Never early never overdue
We're steady getting there

The sails are up
The sheets are tied
Hold on and enjoy the ride
We're steady getting there
We're steady getting there
We're steady getting there

Six Feet Bigger
With A Diesel And A Wheel

Listen to Six Feet Bigger... MP3

Nobody's happy
With what they got
It's either too cold
Or it's too hot

Bigger is better
More room more speed
Even though most
Have more than they need

A longer water line
A wider beam
Gets me so excited
If you knows what I mean

It's the way that I am
It's the way that I feel
It's human nature
Six feet bigger with a diesel and a whee

We're moving Up
Not moving down
We're moving on
We're not hanging around

It's not out of necessity
It's not out of need
In fact some might say
That it's just plain greed

It's the way that I am
It's the way that I feel
It's human nature
Six feet bigger with a diesel and a wheel

A bigger house
A big screen TV
A new Mercedes (500SL)
Yea it's all for me

You can not take it with you
When it's time to go
So while we're here
We want it all, you know

It's the way that I am
It's the way that I feel
It's human nature
Six feet bigger with a diesel and a wheel

Boat Logic
Listen to Boat Logic - MP3

he's got that gleam in his eyes
and he can't look away
it's not the first time he's fallen
so hard in just days
he's infatuated again
and it won't go away
he's overwhelmed with desire
and he knows he'll pay

and he's living on boat logic
dreamin' of the Tropics
shucking it all and just sailing away
he's tired of being landlocked
tired of watching the clock
tick off more of his life
each and every day

it's the only thing on his mind
he thinks about it all of the time
he can't think of anything else
he's so obsessed he needs help

he knows that there must be a way
we can live without cable
cancel the paper
cut back to just two meals a day

he thinks,
if I could just get 15 for mine
and talk them down eight or nineteen
then the bank
would probably float me a loan

and then we'll be underway
we won't think about the bills
or how we will pay them
boat logic, what can I say

it's the only thing on his mind
he thinks about it all of the time
he can't think of anything else
he's so obsessed he needs help

he knows that there must be a way
we'll sell one of the cars
roll up the change in the jars
I'll cut back to just two beers a day
huh, wait a minute, what did I say??

it's illogical folly at best
to landlubbers it makes no sense
but that's boat logic, what can I say
you know boat logic, happens everyday
yea that's boat logic
soon we'll be on our way

Jellyfish
Listen to Jellyfish - MP3

You can see through him as if he wasn't there
He can disappear like he's lighter than air
Just let him go by, no don't get too close
Just why he's here, you know, nobody knows

He's a jellyfish, and you can see right through
He's a jellyfish, he don't care 'bout you
He's a jellyfish, he's just out for himself
And he's got the man believing that
There's nobody else!

He drifted in from the West coast
He'll hang himself, soon as he gets enough rope
To hear him talk you'd think he had it all
Just the fact that he's working makes his story seem small

He's a jellyfish, and you can see right through
He's a jellyfish, he don't care 'bout you
He's a jellyfish, he's just out for himself
And he's got the man believing he did it all himself!

He'll be here for awhile but soon they'll all catch on
Then his sorry self will just have to move on
Not for the first time of that much I'm sure
And not for the last because there is no cure

When you're a jellyfish, and they can see right through
He's a jellyfish, he don't care 'bout you
He's a jellyfish, he's just out for himself
And he's got the man believing he did it all himself!

He's a jellyfish, and you can see right through
He's a jellyfish, he don't care 'bout you
He's a jellyfish, he's just out for himself
And he's got the man believing that there's nobody else!

He's a jellyfish!
He's a jellyfish!
He's a jellyfish!

Party Barge
Listen to Party Barge - MP3

Another Summer, looks like I'm still here
Cavitating going nowhere
Days become months become years
Maybe it's just my destiny
Maybe it's just my fate
Maybe I still have some time left
Maybe it's much too late

And I'm on Assawoman Bay
Working on a boat
They call her the Party Barge
Playing music for the tourist folk
Strummin' my guitar
You know we take 'em out
We bring 'em back
A couple of drinks and a couple of snacks
We never really go too far
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)

Last week we had us a wedding
They wanted to be married at sea
But I don't think it's going to last
The way the bride was winking at me
She said she liked my singing
She said she liked my songs
She said she liked my shorts
Once ashore I didn't stick around long

The Captain seems to like me
Maybe 'cause I'm a Captain too
Sometimes when things get
Rough out there
He asks what I would do
It's not that he's not confident
It's not that he's unsure
It's not that he would even
Change his mind
He just likes to be reassured

And I'm on Assawoman Bay
Working on a boat
They call her the Party Barge
Playing music for the tourist folk
Strummin' my guitar
You know we take 'em out
We bring 'em back
A couple of dreams
And a couple of snacks
We never really go too far
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)

And I'm on Assawoman Bay
Working on a boat
They call her the Party Barge
Playing music for the tourist folk
Strummin' my guitar
You know we take 'em out
We bring 'em back
A couple of dreams
And a couple of snacks
We never really go too far
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)

You know we take 'em out
We bring 'em back
A couple of drinks and a couple of snacks
Some people find all their dreams
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)

Me I'm just doing time
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)
We never really go to far
On the Party Barge (the Party Barge)

Ship to Shore
Listen to Ship to Shore

when I think of all the crazy things I've tried
all the times I almost died
living life with no fear
it amazes me that I'm still here
there must be a reason
but what it is I am not sure
and I'm living life underway
ship to shore

when I think of all the opportunities
I let slip away from me
didn't know or just didn't care
innocent or unaware
there must be a reason
but what it is I am not sure
and I'm living life underway
ship to shore

Living life underway and ship to shore
Don't know where I'm goin'
Or what I'm searching for
But it's not behind me
Of that I am quite sure
And I'm living life underway
Ship to shore

when I think of all the friends I used to have
all the times that we once had
we all went our separate ways
to pay the dues we all must pay
there must be a reason
but what it is I am not sure
and I'm living life underway
ship to shore

Living life underway and ship to shore
Don't know where I'm goin'
Or what I'm searching for
But it's not in my wake
Of that I am quite sure
And I'm living life underway
Ship to shore

you know I'm thinking back to all the crazy things I've tried
all the times I almost died

Annapolis
Listen to Annapolis - MP3

I've been around the world, around the block
I've been around a time or two
I've been everywhere that's anywhere
Tried everything there is to do

I've burned my share of bridges
I've burned the candle at both ends
I've been up and I've been down
But I'm coming back again . . . to

Annapolis, where the women are gorgeous
Everybody's rich and nobody fails
Annapolis, well come on and join us
Come on down and we'll go for a sail

I've been near and far, here and there
Yea I've been a rollin' stone
I've been out in the middle of the deep blue ocean
And always found my way back home

I've taken roads less traveled
I've been lost and I've been found
I've been away for Oh so long
But I'm coming back around . . . to

Annapolis, well you can't ignore us
Everybody parties and the music always wails
Annapolis, come on & join us
Jump on the boat & we'll go for a sail

Just up the Severn off the Chesapeake Bay . . .

Annapolis, where the women are gorgeous
Everybody's rich and nobody fails
Annapolis, well come on and join us
Come on down and we'll go for a sail
Annapolis, well you can't ignore us
Everybody parties and the music always wails
Annapolis, well come on & join us
Jump on the boat & we'll go for a sail

Just up the Severn off the Chesapeake Bay . . .

The Goat Song
Listen to The Goat Song - MP3

Wanna own a goat
Wanna have sheep
You know I wanna live somewhere
Where the living is cheap

Maybe on a mountain
Maybe on a lake
You know I gotta be careful
Don't wanna make a mistake

I'm tired of this city
I'm tired of this town
Tired of where am
Tired of hanging around

I want to sail away . . .
Find me an island to call my own
An island girl to play wit'
Just her and me in the coconut grove

Gonna buy a boat
Take it out where it's deep
Let the wind fill the sails
Finally get me some sleep

And when I wake up
I don't know where I'll be
But wherever it is
I'm sure that I'll be happy

I want to sail away . . .
Find me an island to call my own
An island girl to play wit'
Just her and me in the coconut grove

Wanna own a goat
Wanna have sheep
You know I wanna live somewhere
Where the living is cheap

I want to sail away . . .

 Pfiesteria

Listen to Pfiesteria - MP3

Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see such a crime
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died
Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see the canaries in the coal mine
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died

Crabs crawl from the water
Trying to escape their fate
Fish float on the surface
Tell me that it's getting late
Oxygen deprived and over fertilized
Don't the grass on the gulf course sure look green
I think you know what I mean

Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til we'd see such a crime
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died
Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see the canaries in the coal mine
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died

Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see the canaries in the coal mine
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died

Prehistoric, microscopic, lurking in the deep
Half plant half animal, fast asleep
A taste of PCB's
Or chicken farm run-off maybe
Either way it's now awake
And it's hungry

Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see such a crime
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died
Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see the canaries in the coal mine
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died

Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria
Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria, Pfiesteria

Who knew it was just a matter of time
'til we'd see such a crime
Who'da thought it was a matter of time
'til the Bay died

Captain Dan
Listen to Captain Dan
- MP3

Captain Dan was a friend of my father's
But to me he was family
I always called him my uncle
He always called me matey
Captain Dan was a waterman,
He also loved to sail
He used to run a Skipjack
Until the oyster harvest failed

He was the tide and he was the wind
Out on the water they became part of him
He used to laugh at me because
I was afraid to swim
For fear a fish might bite me

Captain Dan ended up on land
Laying brick and paving roads
Bought himself a runabout
Just something he could tow
And we'd leave Stony Creek in the morning
For Love Point Or Seven Foot Knoll
Anchor out with blood worms and peelers
Or bucktails on a slow troll

He taught me when it's best to give way
He taught me when to hold my course
He taught me when to set the hook
When I feel a fish start to bite me

Time goes by like an outgoing tide
Except it never returns
Realities become memories
Lessons in life we've learned
Now he's old and his eyes are failing
From what I hear, the rest of him too
I still remember my time spent
Fishing on the Bay on a small boat
With Captain Dan, and me as the crew

Now he's old and his eyes are failing
From what I hear, the rest of him too
I still remember my time spent
Fishing on the Bay on a small boat
With Captain Dan and me as the crew

Uncle Dan was a friend of my father's
But to me he was family

The Compromise Dance
Listen to The Compromise Dance
- MP3

Well Buzz wanted to fly but he became a sailor
Still gets Bernoulli's Effect
He looks up at the sky flirting with danger
Standing on a pitching deck
He wonders why his life took these strange turns
When he gets the chance to reflect
Ya know it's not just a matter of success or failure
It's luck and it's fate at best

Because we can't always do what we really want to
We don't often get the chance
So we sign on as crew and we muddle on through
Doing the compromise dance

Well Sandy dreamed of cruising and high seas adventure
When she was nothing more than a pup
But a scholarship into the US Air Force
Soon had her life looking up
She flies an F-14, and man does it scream
When she makes those afterburners roar
But deep down inside, ya know, she still dreams
Of sailing slowly to some distant shore

Because we can't always do what we really want to
We don't often get the chance
So we sign on as crew and we muddle on through
Doing the compromise dance

And we all have dreams we hope will come true
But we all do what we have to do

Well now I bet that you thought that as a writer my goal was to
Bring them together in song
But the more that I thought about the whole darn thing
It seemed predictable, contrived and wrong

Because we can't always do what we really want to
We don't often get the chance
So we sign on as crew and we muddle on through
Doing the compromise dance

Yea we bitch and we moan and we muddle on through
Doing the compromise dance
Doing the compromise dance
We're all doing the compromise dance

Somewhere Out There
(dream big and dare to fail)

Listen to Somewhere Out There - MP3

She looks at me in anger
She looks at me with fear
She looks at me and she understands
That soon I will be out there

She looks at me in silence
She looks at me and roars
She looks at me and she laughs out loud
'cause she knows what's in store
For me . . .

Somewhere out there my destiny lies
Somewhere out there where the sea meets the sky
Somewhere out there I'll live or I'll die
On the sea

Somewhere out there I'll succeed or I'll fail
Somewhere out there with the dolphins and whales
Somewhere out there with the wind in my sails
On the sea

And I wait to hear her call
As I watch the barometer fall

Dream big and dare to fail
Don't lose your nerve
In the middle of a gale
Strap your hands to the wheel
Keep your face to the wind
You'll always lose
If you never try to win

She looks at me in anger
She looks at me with fear
She looks at me and she laughs out loud
'cause soon I will be out there

Out of Sight of Land

Listen to Out of Sight of Land - MP3

Out of sight of land
Out of sync with time
Out of sight of man
On my rhumb line

I was almost out of luck
Almost out of time
Almost good and stuck
Almost out of my mind

If you're gonna go away
Go away far
If you're gonna change something, well
Change who you are
If you're gonna reach for something
Reach for the stars
(You got nothing to lose
And everything to gain
You're tired of playing
The same old game
And always losing again)
It's time to go my friend

Yea I'm out of sight of land
Running on the outside
I think I finally understand
I'm running for my life

If you're gonna go away
Go away far
If you're gonna change something, well
Change who you are
If you're gonna reach for something
Reach for the stars
(You got nothing to lose
And everything to gain
You're tired of playing
The same old game
And always losing again)
It's time to go my friend

Out of sight of land
On my own time
Out of sight of man

Finally found peace of mind
